Artist's Statement
There have been many movements in photography that have tried to define the world. In fact, this is one of its biggest draws... The ability to document. Some people argue this is the medium's greatest feature. Now, with the use of computers and digital technology, the camera's ability to record without prejudice is no longer trusted. The truth is, photography has never been a substitute for what our eyes can see and our body's experience. The best photographs are ones that can create moods that extend beyond the borders and contain more than the substances from which they are made. Good photographs speak to us in a way that is difficult to articulate. Then again, if it were easy to describe, photography would be about words and not images. The first time I saw Eliot Porter's book The Place Where No One Knew I could almost smell the pictures. Not only did Porter faithfully record the Glen Canyon, he did so in a way that gave the viewer a genuine sense of how he felt about the landscape. For me, photography is not limited to defining our world in the cold aberration of reality... It is free to mimic life as the artist sees fit. I offer these images as a glimpse into my world. These are the visual chronicles of what I think is captivating and provocative. A record of various places where the latent image is the true subject matter and boundless source of inspiration. ...Images are enveloped in sound, smell and the perfect complications of the simple... |
